Modern Apprenticeships for the Sector

In Scotland MAs are developed by Sector Skills Councils . Sector Skills Councils consult with their employers and key partners in their sectors to develop a training programme which meets the needs of employers. In Scotland there are more than 70 frameworks and they are all designed to deliver a training package around a minimum standard of competence defined by employers. An MA contains the same basic criteria:

  • A relevant SVQ/NVQ or other competence based qualification
  • Core skills and
  • Industry Specific Training

The Modern Apprenticeship Group (MAG) is an independent group who draws its authority from the Scottish Government. Membership of the group includes representatives from key stakeholders in the management and delivery of the MA programme in Scotland. The group is responsible for the approval and de-approval of all Scottish MA frameworks and encourages SSCs to develop robust frameworks that have high participation and completion rates, and meet the needs of their sector in the current economic climate.
