Apprenticeships
Apprenticeships represent one of the best ‘tools’ available on the market to ensure business continuity. With an increasing ageing workforce profile across the process and manufacturing sector, there is a real danger that invaluable skills will be lost. Apprenticeships provide for the transfer of skills, expertise and knowledge and ensure that current and future workforces learn the skills that work best for your business and keep valuable skills ‘in the family’.
Currently, Apprenticeships are available at Level 2 and Level 3.
All the new SASE/W compliant Apprenticeships are made up of a number of elements that are assessed and /or certified separately
- A competence-based element – A relevant work-based qualification such as a National Vocational or Scottish Vocational Qualification at either Level 2 or 3
- A knowledge-based element – A technical qualification such as a BTEC or City & Guilds (relevant to the specific Apprenticeship), that provides further knowledge and understanding of the relevant job
- Transferable/Functional Skills in English and Maths (mandatory) and Information and Communications Technology (optional) NB: Key Skills are acceptable alternatives for an extended period of time – please see framework documents for further details of this and other possible alternatives
- Achievement of 9 national outcomes relating to Employee Rights and Responsibilities
- Achievement of the national outcomes for 6 Personal, Learning and Thinking Skills – Independent Enquiry, Creative Thinking, Reflective Learning, Team Working, Self Management and Effective Participation.

Personal Learning and Thinking Skills for England: Proskills have developed a PLTS workbook and declaration/sign off sheet which is appropriate for use in the following sectors: Building Products, Coatings, Extractive & Mineral Processing, Furniture, Furnishings and Interiors Manufacturing, Glass and Related Industries, Glazed Ceramics, Paper and Board Manufacture and Print and Printed Packaging.
Please note that we are currently preparing PLTS signposting documents for all of our sectors. These are designed to give an indication of where there is potential for the required PLTS learning outcomes to be demonstrated and evidenced whilst an Apprentice is undertaking and achieving the mandatory units within either the competence or knowledge components of their chosen framework.
The signposting documents are not intended to be exhaustive and Apprentices, Employers and Providers are all encouraged to identify for themselves opportunities, throughout framework delivery, for PLTS to be demonstrated, achieved and evidenced. The PLTS workbook can be used for evidence recording or signposting to other forms of evidence and also contains a sign off sheet which must be completed and submitted when claiming an Apprenticeship Certificate. Note: Alternatively, Apprentices achieving an accredited QCF unit for PLTS can submit this as evidence of their PLTS achievement.
