Working In The Industry

Employer Skills Requirements

In recent years, glass production processes have benefited from computerisation and the development of many new automated processes. These developments have improved the quality of glass produced, whilst reducing waste and speeding up production rates.

Research completed in 2005 found there were 8 major glass container manufacturers operating in the UK, who altogether employed 6,500 staff. All of these manufacturers had automated systems in place. However, many glass/glazing jobs still require manual skills and many involve working with your hands, handling heavy equipment, and spending long periods standing; so physical fitness is important. The work also relies heavily on teamwork and good communication skills. These are valued very highly by employers, as they:

  • Help you work effectively with other employees
  • Enable you to work directly with customers
  • Support management staff, who need to drive and motivate whole teams.

Work based qualifications such as NVQs / SVQs / Apprenticeships / AVCEs (Vocational A' Levels) and BTEC Diplomas related to glass sector careers are widely available. GCSEs also provide a solid base to build on, with subjects such as Art, Science and Design and Technology are all seen as useful by glass sector employers, along with English, Mathematics, IT and Business Studies. From 2009, the new Diploma in Manufacturing and Product Design will be available in schools at three levels. This will provide an excellent route into the glass manufacturing sector. In addition, the Construction and Built Environment Diploma (available in 2008 in schools) will also provide an excellent start for pupils interested in a career in window, door and conservatory installation.

Some glass sector entry level jobs can be offered without qualifications, if a good impression is created at interview. Showing enthusiasm, good communication skills, providing proof of a mature attitude and problem solving skills can all help your chances - as many skills can be developed if you have the right attitude while you are employed.
