Peter Williamson

"It gives me the flexibility of working in an office and outside"

I'm Peter Williamson and I'm a Quarry Manager. I'm 25 years old, and one of the youngest site managers in the business. I'm also pleased to say that my site is one of the most profitable. I've been here for over three years now.

In a typical day

There is a variety of roles around the site, fitters, mobile plant operators (people who drive and maintain the big trucks). These jobs themselves hold a great deal of responsibility: the staff need to ensure their vehicles are maintained and in good condition. I have to make sure that health and safety regulations are met and maintained to keep everyone and the site a safe place to work in.

Best bits of my job

Managing the quarry gives me the flexibility of working in an office combined with working outside. No two days are the same: one day I could be sitting in the office managing the accounts, the next meeting the staff who work on site. Last week I met a palaeontologist and an ornithologist! I love the flexibility and the different sorts of people my work lets me meet.

The company is great at investing in you as an individual, too. I've had many days of training and further education - all paid for by the company.

How I got here

I studied geology at university. In my final year I handed my CV to an aggregate company who forwarded it to another firm. I was invited to an open day as part of the interview process to enter their graduate programme. This introduction to the quarry industry really inspired me and I thought, "Great, this is exactly what I want to do". Once I started, the graduate programme introduced me to a variety of job options and I was able to choose which part of the industry I wanted to work in.
