  • Careers for armed forces "Stop Looking and Start Digging" - Proskills has been working closely with the Careers Transition Partnership and other forces personnel over the last six months to develop an information pack that was specifically tailored to meet the needs of and attract servicemen and women from all branches of the armed forces. The pack enabled service personnel to clearly understand the different roles and opportunities that exist within the extractive and mineral processing sector. The qualifications and experiences required for these roles were related back to service experience and job titles where appropriate.

Careers and sector image

When Proskills was established, it became clear early on that there was one key issue that all our industry groups wanted sorting out. They all said our industry is hidden away and many people (not just the young) have a poor impression of what we do.

They don’t know that our modern processes are driven by technology, they don’t know how interesting and rewarding a career in our industry can be, and they are ill prepared to make decisions on their future career.

To address the problem, Proskills appointed a manager (Neil Robinson) responsible for our sector image and careers plan. To contact Neil call 07917 015 322 or email. We are currently developing several work plans and objectives.

A new careers-focused website will become Proskills' main portal for careers-related initiatives directed towards young people. Based upon a typical street scene, the site is soon to go live under the URL www.prospect4u.co.uk.

Another recent project has been the development and roll out of “I Choose” careers material in partnership with Business and Education South Yorkshire and Print Yorkshire. These booklets and resource folders originally developed for South Yorkshire Printing contain a wealth of information about jobs and careers. Local employers can add their profile to advertise to young people job opportunities and career progression they have. Proskills is assisting with the roll out in South Yorkshire, and will be developing new packs to support the coatings, building products, glass and extractives industries.
