Northern Ireland is home to 2,600 companies working in the process and manufacturing sector, employing 25,000 individuals. All of the 9 industries are represented in Northern Ireland, with the Extractive and Mineral Processing, Furniture, Furnishings & Interiors, Glass & Related Industries and Printing industries having the largest representation.

The present Skills Strategy, which is currently under review, for Northern Ireland, Success through Skills has four main strands:

  • Understanding the demand of skills
  • Improving the skills levels of the workforce
  • Improving the quality and relevance of education and training
  • Tackling the skills barriers to employment and employability

This strategy is an integral part of the Proskills strategy for Northern Ireland.

A new skills strategy for Northern Ireland has been developed by the Department of Employment & Learning and is currently open for consultation. Proskills Role in the Nations

Proskills exists in the nations to:

  • Give employers working in the process and manufacturing sector in Northern Ireland a voice on skills and skills related issues
  • Shape and influence the developed governments skills policy to meet the demands of the sector
  • To ensure that training provision meets the current and future demands of local employers
  • Make our industries a real career choice to encourage young people into the industry
  • Ensure timely access to qualifications is available
