Help for furnishing industry students
Students studying for furnishing industry qualifications at degree level may now be able to get help with a new scheme of bursaries and scholarships from the Furnishing Industry Trust (FIT, formerly the FTBA).
The industry’s only dedicated charity has ring fenced an annual sum of £12,000 for scholarships and bursaries to be made available to students who meet criteria set by FIT, the Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers and relevant educational institutions.
The sum will include two lots of £5,000 grants for MA students studying for furnishing industry related skills. A further £2,000 will be available to help third year students on BA courses with the cost of materials.
Said FIT chief executive Charles Kerrigan: “The charity has long had a policy of offering help to young people studying traditional furnishing skills. We have now formalised this arrangement which will be managed by the Worshipful Company given its involvement in training for the sector.”
Furniture students at Bucks New University and Oxford and Cherwell Valley College are the first to benefit from the new funding arrangement. The scholarships will support two students on the MA Furniture Design and Technology course at Bucks New University and the bursaries will support up to five students studying on undergraduate furniture programmes at Bucks or foundation degrees at the Rycotewood Furniture Centre, Oxford and Cherwell Valley College.
