Emergency Budget Review

Proskills welcomes the statements that have been issued by the Coalition Government to reforming the skills system, and agrees that simplification is required to ensure that employers can access the funding and support that they need.

However, yesterday’s Budget report contained no direct indication of how the ongoing cuts and deficit reductions will affect the skills system or public support for employer training. It also had very little information regarding the support that will be required for manufacturing companies if the economy is to be successfully rebalanced. A White Paper due later this summer will describe the local bodies replacing the Regional Development Agencies, and will therefore hopefully provide more details in this area.

We expect that more details on the future of the skills system will be contained in the Spending Review that will be published on 20th October 2010.

In the meantime, Proskills will continue to work with employers in the Process and Manufacturing sector, stakeholders, and the Government to ensure that any future changes in the qualifications and skills systems reflect the real needs of employers in the Process and Manufacturing industry, and will help the economy to recover from the recession.
