Developing Apprenticeship Trailblazers

Employers and other organisations are now leading the way in changing apprenticeships and ensuring they meet the needs for industry and young people. Proskills leads on several trailblazer steering groups and guides the process of developing new standards. If you’re an employer interested in taking part in the development of new apprenticeship frameworks for your industry then please contact Proskills’ Apprenticeships & Qualification Manager, Lisa Williamson at: lisa.williamson@proskills.co.uk

Trailblazer Steering Groups

Proskills is currently leading on several Trailblazer Steering Groups to develop new apprenticeship frameworks in England.

Following the announcement by Nick Boles on 12th March James Latham and Proskills UK Group are pleased to confirm they will lead on the development of a new Wood Apprenticeship Standard as part of the Governments Phase 4 Trailblazers. Trailblazers are groups of leading large and small employers within a sector who work together to develop new apprenticeship standards.

This project is supported by employers in the sector (listed below). The group will be chaired by Piers Latham.

The new apprenticeships will be:

  • employer-led and designed so they respond to the needs of industry, meaning each apprentice has the skills required by the sector
  • focused on quality so the apprentice has to demonstrate their ability through rigorous assessment at the end of their apprenticeship
  • graded on completion – pass, merit, or distinction – to mark the level of achievement

Group:

Adam Wilson, Arbor Forest Products Ltd, Associated Timber Services Ltd, Bournemouth & Poole College, Builders Merchants Federation, Didac Ltd, E A Higginson & Co Ltd, Elmwood Joinery (East Anglia) Ltd, Houghtons Of York, Howarth Timber Windows & Doors Limited, James Donaldson And Sons Ltd, Leeds College Of Building, Medina Joinery, Mint Construction, Parker & Highland Joinery, SCA Timber Supply Limited, SCM Group UK Ltd, STP Timber Products Ltd, Sylva Group Ltd, T Brewer And Co Ltd, Timbmet Ltd, Tompkins Ltd, TRADA.

We’re pleased to announce that the new Furniture Manufacturing Apprenticeship Standard which has been developed by employers has been approved.

The standard includes the following occupational options:

  • General Furniture Manufacturing
  • Bed Making
  • Modern Upholstery

The apprenticeship standard has now been published, which in time will replace current frameworks as part of the Government’s apprenticeship reform programme to make apprenticeships more rigorous and more responsive to employers.
