Furniture & Furnishing

Furniture has always existed since the age of the caveman. The logs they use to sit on are the basic forms of a chair or a bench and as such furniture has always been integral to the success of mankind.

After the retreat of the last ice age, the hunter-gatherer communities of the Stone Age gradually began to acquire the skills of agriculture, and civilizations were born. Craftsmen began to develop their trades in producing articles such as jewellery, pottery and furniture. As mankind developed so did his skills.

As furniture items have evolved it is normally to form a purpose. Initially furniture was made from wood but over the years, as technology has moved on and we have new methods of manufacture, we find that iron, strong metals and plastics are being used to create new and exciting shapes and pieces of furniture.

In order to meet the challenges of the changing market place and ensure sustainability of the industry and a profitable future we need to upskill the current workforce and recruit new people.  Proskills is here to support the industry in doing just that by driving up the standards of qualifications and courses and influencing investment and funding in skills and training.

In this section, you will find an industry profile and more information about Proskills’ current focus and activities.
